Chris Illert was briefly (1978-80) a member of our Society when we were known as MARIA (the Marine Aquarium Research Institute of Australia – SA Branch). He later joined the staff at Wollongong University.

During his MARIA membership, he was the founding editor of our first journal (MARIA Journal). Chris edited the first 3 journals before they became the responsibility of an editorial committee.
(Our Journals continued to be published until 2014, as the MLSSA Journal. The final issue was MLSSA Journal No.24 (there were several MARIA Journals prior to the MLSSA Journals).)

Chris on a later dive
This is mainly an introduction to Chris because some of his work has been donated to our library. He had donated his book “Sea-shell Mathematics” (mlssa No.1014) to us long ago. We received several more donations more recently. Item 2333, for example, is “Botany Bay’s Sea-grass Meadows – an ecological overview” by Chris and Daniela Reverberi.

There is a lot of history within these files. The information within the files is too important to be overlooked.

Chris was my teacher at Glengowrie High School. I remember my friend and I going to see him at home once, where he showed us his HP computer and plotter, and demonstrated some of the equations he had worked out for the shape of common seashells. At the time I was experimenting with Fortran on the Flinders University IBM-1130.
