The then Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources published an A4-size booklet titled “SA Marine Parks Sanctuary Zone Maps” in 2014.
The same department (DEWNR) published an A4-size booklet titled “A Snorkeler’s guide to plants and animals in South Australia’s Marine Parks” in 2016.
As the title suggests, this latest booklet focussed solely on the plants and animals in South Australia’s Marine Parks.
A quick scan through the photos for each of the plants and animals featured in the booklet reveals that several of those photos were taken by Marine Life Society of South Australia members past and present.
Those members include Graham Short, our Overseas Ambassador, who took a couple of the photos featured. Current members (Life Members) David Muirhead and Chris Hall also took several of the photos, especially David. MLSSA is also mentioned in conjunction with some of those photos.
The booklet was updated by the Department for Environment and Water in 2020 and revised in 2021, under the title of “An underwater guide to plants and animals in South Australia”.
The revised version of 2021 (at least) included a map of SA’s Marine Parks. (The maps in “SA Marine Parks Sanctuary Zone Maps” are much in much larger detail though.)
It also featured almost all of the same photographs from the 2016 version. The (Great) White shark and mammals such as seals, dolphins and whales have been added to this latest version. Squid are lucky to get the briefest of reference though.
