JOIN THE MARINE LIFE SOCIETY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA NOW!

There has never been a better time than now to become a member of the Marine Life Society of South Australia!

Although our financial year starts on 1st April 2022, anyone who becomes a new MLSSA member before then will remain financial until 31st May 2023.

But wait, there’s more!

The Marine Life Society of SA is partnering with Thomas Man In order to help to clean up our rivers, lakes and coastline by introducing ‘Clearbot’ into South Australia.

Clearbot can be seen in YouTube videos at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IbgBvtvpeg   and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkC1TdDLMvY . Clearbot is an autonomous boat that detects and collects marine litter.

According to www.clearbot.org , “Clearbot is a swarm of AI powered, self-driving, ocean trash collecting robots that can detect and collect trash from water. We are on a mission to clean our rivers and oceans globally, using Clearbot”.

‘Our’ Clearbot will be used for public demonstrations and environmental education. The presence of the multi-award-winning Clearbot in South Australia would help to focus the community on the need to protect our marine environment. There will be some live (wet) demonstrations and monthly Clearbot shows (dry demos).

The aim of this non-profit project is to promote the crucial importance of caring for our environment and to minimise marine litter in our waterways and along the coast. Clearbot will be used to draw public attraction about environmental care and motivate learning.

The Clearbot boat will arrive in June 2022, and it will be kept in South Australia for long-term use. Although www.clearbot.org states that Clearbot can operate as a swarm of coordinated marine robots, only one boat can be brought in next year. It is hoped that there is sufficient funding in the long-term to demonstrate the ‘cobot’ capability of Clearbot with multiple boats.

MLSSA will connect with the SA State Government, local councils and environmental groups for endorsing the project and helping to share the information with schools and the community.

It is hoped, subject to SA Government and/or local council approvals, that Clearbot can be demonstrated in SA waterways such as the River Torrens, West Lakes, the Port River, Mawson Lakes and the Gawler River.

All financial MLSSA members will be invited to Clearbot demonstrations and peek preview/photo sessions with the boat. The venues and dates for the two events, likely to be in coming October 2022, will be announced in June. (This offer is subject to the Clearbot program going ahead as determined by the Clearbot Program’s organiser.) No additional membership fee or cost will be charged for this extra benefit.
